Abstract (Περίληψη)

Wet and dry deposition are the two major physical processes responsible for the physical removal of air pollutants from the atmosphere. Simulation of these two processes has received relatively little attention compared to the production mechanisms (emissions and chemical reactions) of the corresponding pollutants. In this work the three-dimensional chemical transport model PMCAMx is used to simulate the lifecycle of gas and particulate-phase atmospheric pollutants over Europe during a late-spring period. The dry and wet removal fluxes of the major pollutants as a function of space and time are analyzed.

The importance of these processes for the various pollutants depends significantly on their aqueous solubility (for vapors) and on their size (for particles). The deposition rates are also quite sensitive to the local meteorology (rain frequency and intensity as well wind speed) but also on the land type and use.

The changes in the partitioning scheme used cause a variety of change in the fine, coarse and gas-phase concentrations of ammonia/ammonium and nitric acid/nitrate but the net change in their deposition rates is less than 10%.
