Module Details

The nomenclature and structure of organic compounds and functional groups

The types of intermolecular forces and their effect on the physical properties of organic compounds

The main reaction mechanisms of organic molecules as: Nucleophilic Substitution (SN1 and SN2), Nucleophilic Elimination (Ε1 and Ε2), Electrophilic Addition Reactions and Markovnikov rule, Free Radical Reactions and Electrophilic Aromatic Substitution Reactions   

The main mechanisms of synthesis of the most important organic compounds and families

There are no prerequisite courses. It is, however, recommended that students should have knowledge of  General Chemistry, Reaction Kinetics, Atomic-Molecular Orbitals and Hybridization, Acid – Bases and Basic Thermodynamic Properties (Free Energy Gibbs, Enthalpy, Entropy)

  3. Introduction to Chemical Reactions and Mechanisms – Acid – Bases and their reactions  
  4. Nomenclature and isomerism of alkane and cycloalkanes – Conformations of alkanes and cycloalkanes
  5. Ε. Stereochemistry of alkanes and cycloalkanes
  6. Nucleophilic Substitution Reactions – Mechanisms  SN1 and SN2
  7. Nucleophilic Elimination Reactions – Mechanisms  E1 and E2
  8. Η. Alkenes/Alkines – Electrophilic Addition Reactions in double/triple bonds - Markovnikov rules
  9. Mechanisms of Free Radical Reactions and Polymerization
  10. Aromatic Compounds – Nomenclature – Synthesis and Properties – Mechanism of Electrophilic Substitution Reactions

Three written exams during the semester that cover the whole module material. The students that succeed to all three exams (grade > 5) may choose not to participate to the final written and or oral exam.
