At the Department of Chemical Engineering (DCE) is conducted innovative research of high quality, focused on both traditional and emerging research areas of interest to Chemical Engineers. The research activity of the DCE faculty members follows, but is not limited to, the general directions of the three Sections of the Department, which are Process Engineering and Environment, Chemical Technology and Applied Physical Chemistry and Materials Science and Engineering.

Funding of research at DCE comes from competitive European programs but also from industries, competitive national programs and the Research Committee of the University of Patras. The recognition of the research work of the Department is reflected both in the large number of publications per faculty member (103 papers in refereed journals, 10 books / monographs, 78 papers in conference proceedings and 4 chapters in edited volumes, during the academic year 2011 -2012) and in the impressive total annual number of citations (3958 in the academic year 2011-2012). It is noteworthy to mention that according to the results of the international rankings QS - Top Universities / World University Ranking in 2012 the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Patras ranks 9th in the world and 2nd in Europe as it concerns the CCP (Citations-Per-Publication) index (92.4). This index is calculated dividing the total number of citations to the published research work of the faculty of a Department for a five-year period by the number of faculty members. The recognition of the quality of research work of the DCE faculty is also reflected in their participation in committees of international conferences and editorial boards of international journals as well as in the significant number of invited lectures at international conferences.
