Abstract (Περίληψη)
Anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions contribute to global warming and the imminent climate change due to being greenhouse gases. Today, the main carbon capture technologies (CO2) are based on amines that are costly both from an energy and economic point of view. The development of new technologies employing MOFs (Metal Organic Frameworks) or ionic liquids have shown encouraging results and are considered as future substitutes for amines.
Ionic liquids (ILs) are salts that melt below 100 °C and consist of organic cations and organic / inorganic anions. They present a range of properties that make them very good solvents for various processes such as CO2 capture.
This paper aims at investigating the use of dicationic ionic liquids as potential CO2 capture systems. For this reason, dicationic ionic liquids (DILs) based on imidazolium (Im+) were synthesized and studied, with general chemical formulas:
- CnH2n(MIm)2Br2 , where n = 1 - 12 και
- CH2(EIm)2Br2.
The ionic liquids were deposited on porous alumina particles (Al2O3) and studied for their adsorption and desorption capability of CO2 by the Temperature Programmed Desorption method (TPD). Experimental results show that dicationic ionic liquids have good adsorption capability for CO2, while the system with the best behavior was Bis(MIm)C2H4Br2.
