Abstract

The rising use of wind and solar electricity in power grids worldwide requires the increase of storage capacity due to the intermittent nature of these sources. There are various possibilities for storage methods. Storage as mechanical energy (flywheels, reversing hydropower plants), storage as chemical energy in batteries and storage as chemical energy in other chemicals (hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, etc.). The last of these is commonly known as Power-to-X, where X is the chemical in question, and has the added benefit of allowing for different methods of recovering this chemical energy. While the theoretically most efficient system would involve a fuel cell converting X back to electricity (Power-to-X-to-Power systems), X might also be converted back to electricity in a more traditional manner (thermoelectric combustion systems). Furthermore, in the unlikely case of an overproduction of ammonia or methanol, X can also be sold as a value-added chemical. This talk will cover some cases of Power-to-X and Power-to-X-to-Power as explored in various research papers and projects over the past decade.

Speakers Short CV

Dr. Ioannis Garagounis is at present a post-doctoral researcher at the Chemical Process and Energy Resources Institute (https://www.cperi.certh.gr/en/) at the Center for Research and Technology Hellas in Thessaloniki, Greece. He graduated from the Department of Chemical Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2009 and obtained his PhD from the same university in 2016. His research interests have focused on green electrochemical processes (electrochemical thermodynamics and kinetics, reactor engineering and materials), including CO2 utilization (electro-hydrogenation to methanol and methane, electrolysis toward CO), electrochemical ammonia synthesis (from steam, methane etc), biomass to energy conversion technologies and steam electrolysis processes (fuel-assisted, co-electrolysis with CO2, and anodic electrolysis in proton conducting systems. He has co-authored 23 articles in international peer-reviewed journals, 25 papers in international conference proceedings and 15 in national conference proceedings, accruing a total of 551 citations and an h-index of 10 (Scopus). Currently, his research covers developing anodes for efficient steam electrolysis in protonic cells, anodes for biomass fuel cells and cathodes for CO2 hydrogenation.
